The beautiful era of letters.
I started writing for print media at the age of 16. Many of the millennials growing up in Pakistan must remember the charm of a magazine called ‘Akhbar-e-Jahan” (translates as the Newspaper of the world. This was a magazine providing fashion, media and entertainment updates to women. This is where my initial articles started to be published, from education-related topics to some life hacks, I started writing on multiple topics. I still remember my first letter I sent them with my potential article, and later found it published a few weeks ago.

This led me towards other women's magazines (digests) including Hina, Khuwateen, Shuaa and Aanchal. My first Novel was published when I was 18 and got a very significant appreciation. Sooner, the post or Daak, as we call it in Urdu, became my regular or everyday ritual to send things to all magazine companies and publications, and vice versa, I also started receiving the complimentary magazines, letters and reader reviews. Later, the payment royalties (money order) and bigger boxes of books, too, were in the mail.

Here, I am not talking about the mid-80s when we did not have access to emails or digital media. We did have everything, but still in the early 2000’s print media was completely based on postage communication.
I remember my mornings, filled with the aroma of my writings and a secret longing for ‘what is it going to be in my mail today? And whatever arrived brings the joy of daily achievements, love and appreciation.
I still crave such feelings, I still love the fragrance of paper, words written on paper, and the aroma of ink. For me, written letters are still the best medium to convey my feelings, send my words and feel the essence of connection.
I still wait for someone to send me something in the mail. But for a long time, I haven’t received any letter, any card or any appreciation message in the mail, but through other mediums, including emails, SMS and DMS.
